Belated story news

Well, I’m back. Actually, I’ve been back for a few days. However, I returned from no internet access to very slow internet access. There will be a proper writing-retreat related post soon, maybe tomorrow, but it will require more patience than I have now. It just took me all night to upload four photos. *sigh*

But I thought I should note that while I was away two of my stories made good out there in the big wide world.

“The Sea at Night” will be in Ticonderoga Publications’s vampire anthology Dead Red Heart. It’s a story about vampires on Maroubra Beach. Obviously. Dead Red Heart will be coming out in April and preorders can be placed here.

“From the Dry Heart to the Sea” (hey… what’s with the sea theme?) will be in Fablecroft Publishing’s After the Rain. This is also coming out in April, although Tehani has released a limited ebook version to raise money for the Queensland Flood Relief Appeal (a wonderful gesture and one I am very pleased to be a part of).

That’s all I can take this evening. Tomorrow, hopefully, there will be photos. Of deer (and maybe some writers, and also a goose… definitely a waterfall).

Just before I disappear…

Excited to see the Aussies taking over Robot land, with news that Trent Jamieson has signed with Angry Robot Books!

And now I’m off for a week with these people to write and write and write! No internet or mobile phone access though — I just hope it doesn’t turn into something out of the Shining.

No internet and no mobile makes Jo something something…

Adventures in research land

Today was a day full of adventure, research and walking. LOTS of walking. Because the new book — still without title and not quite yet ready to be written — is set in Sydney, I decided some Sydney-based research was in order. After all, I want a good clear picture of what the post-apocalyptic version of my home town will look like. So I roped in a good friend of mine to join me, and my camera, in a day trip around the city.

And boy, did we choose a good day. The harbour was stunning.

And there were tourist-type attractions in the background, sometimes.

And there were boats.

Look at the pretty streets in dappled sunlight.

And small laneways down at the Rocks with the bridge in the background and poor unsuspecting pedestrians.

Oh and a creepy face… I mean, Luna Park. And more boats.

Another laneway, looking very old-school Sydneytown there.

And finally the Sydney Harbour Bridge, being all artistic, you know.

Now, try to imagine a dark, ruinous, post-apocalyptic version of all those beautiful sun-drenched images and we’re half way there!

We took a break from the sun in the middle of the day to do some post-Christmas (not to be mistaken for post-apocalyptic) shopping. But all we came away with was a pair of shorts. *sigh* My shopping-fu has been greatly weakened by budget constraints, I fear.

But still, research and adventures were had. And walking. Did I mention the walking? (my feet hurt)

And what have you done?

Recently? Eaten a LOT. Drunk way too MUCH. And enjoyed every minute of it, thank you.

Somehow I felt like I’ve deserved it. The end of the year has been a bit of a battle. Mix up novel revisions with a bout of the flu and a bad back and what else could you call it, really? But I have survived — although the bad back is being its usual recalcitrant self and seems determined to hang around. So, my reward has been food, drink and merriness. And now I get to write some short stories, just for fun.

While I head off to do that, let me present you with the best Christmas present ever. This shirt was given to me by one of my wonderfully supportive work colleagues.

shirt front

In case you can’t read it the front says: “Coming soon from Author Jo: Debris the first thrilling book in the Veiled World Series” (and yes, my current nickname is Author Jo… guess what, I’m still not sick of it!)

shirt back

And the back says: “Angry Robot Books: Are thrilled to present Author Jo in 2011”

Isn’t she sweet 🙂

I would also like to thank the Navicat for helping me model the shirt there. She’s always a willing and excited participant in such things.

Merry Xmas everyone!

Have a great day.

Real blog post coming soon!
